What is the Faculty and Staff Cal 1 Card?
The Cal 1 Card is your permanent Employee ID card, and it is not transferable. This multi-purpose digital photo ID card combines multiple card technologies. In addition to serving as your photo identification card, this card will also permit you to gain access to campus buildings and events and allow you to take advantage of many University services. The card can also be used as a debit card to pay for purchases at selected locations on and around campus.
What do I need to bring to get my Faculty and Staff Cal 1 Card?
Bring a valid government issued form of identification (e.g., Driver's License, Passport, or California ID card). You will also need your Employee ID Number. The Cal 1 Card staff can obtain this information from the computer system. New employees should make sure their Employee ID Number has been assigned before going to the Cal 1 Card Office.
Where do I go to get my Faculty and Staff Cal 1 Card?
The Cal 1 Card Office is located at 110 Cesar Chavez Center, Lower Sproul Plaza. The telephone number is 1-866-2UCBCARD.
How much will my Faculty and Staff Cal 1 Card cost?
Your initial card is free.
How much will it cost to get a replacement card?
At this time, damaged, lost, stolen or broken cards for staff will be replaced for free.
I have changed my name; can I get a replacement card?
Once you have petitioned a name change with the Campus Human Resources / Payroll Department, you should wait at least five business days before going to the Cal 1 Card Office to get a replacement card. The replacement will be at no cost to you.
How do I get building access?
Once you have received your Cal 1 Card, complete the UCPD Card Key Application with the following information:
- Card # (see lower right corner on the back of the card)
- Employee ID #
- Employee Name
- Building to Which You Need Access
- Work Address
- Work Phone Number
- Date
Be sure to sign the form.
Leave blank: Access, Expiration Date (unless applicable), and Authorization.

How long until access as been activated?
The standard turn around time for UCPD to activate a card is 3-5 business days.
Can I get a card even if I’m a temporary employee?
Yes. As long as you are in the payroll system with a valid Employee ID Number, you are eligible for a Cal 1 Card. Contractors and other campus affiliates can get alternative access assigned by the department. Contact the Controller’s Office, Access Coordinator for assistance.
