UC Furlough/Salary Reduction Plan

On July 15, 2009, the UC Regents approved a one-year systemwide furlough/salary reduction plan for UC employees. For a 12-month period beginning September 1, 2009, employees subject to the plan will be required to take from 11 to 26 furlough days – equal to a salary reduction of 4 to 10 percent based on the employee's full-time salary level. Employees will have their pay reduced by a corresponding percentage in even increments each month during the 12-month plan period and will receive an allotted number of furlough days. To review the number of required furlough days for each salary band, see the UC Berkeley Furlough at a Glance (pdf) on the Human Resources web site.

The primary source of information about the furlough/salary reduction plan is located on the Human Resources website. This Payroll website covers procedures for processing payroll and leave transactions required by the furlough/salary reduction plan.

Employees paid on a monthly pay schedule (MO or MA) will see the salary reduction reflected in their paychecks issued beginning October 1, 2009 for September 2009 earnings. Employees paid on a semi-monthly pay schedule (SM) will see the salary reduction reflected beginning with their September 23, 2009 paycheck for September 1 – 15, 2009 earnings.
