Travel Insurance
Employees Traveling on University Business
University employees, when traveling on official University business, and their traveling companions (see definition below) are covered 24 hours a day, worldwide, for a wide variety of accidents and incidents.
This broad coverage is provided at no cost to the employee, but the employee will need to register all out-of-state and foreign country travel at the UC Trips web site. Upon registration, employees will receive a trip registration card confirming coverage and containing the toll-free number to call in an emergency. In-state travel is also covered, but registration is not required.
The following travel assistance services and benefits are available:
- Emergency Medical Evacuation,
- Security Extraction,
- Accident/Sickness Medical Care (international travel only),
- Travel Alerts,
- Other Travel Assistance Services (such as passport replacement assistance, legal assistance referrals),
- Accidental Death, Dismemberment, or Paralysis Benefits,
- Repatriation of Remains.
These services can be activated by calling the toll-free number on the registration card or by contacting the Office of Risk Management at risk@berkeley.edu.
If there are any delays or difficulties encountered when calling the emergency number, contact Risk Management immediately for help in resolving the problem(s).
Traveling Companions
Traveling companion(s) are defined as a person or persons with whom the employee has coordinated travel arrangements, and who intends to travel with the employee during the covered trip. Examples of traveling companions would be a spouse or domestic partner, children, colleagues, friends and/or extended family. A translator hired in a foreign country would not be a traveling companion. Employees must list their traveling companion(s) when they register their own travel. Both the employee and the traveling companion(s) will receive a trip registration card.
By registering out-of-state and foreign travel, employees ensure coverage for their traveling companion(s), help the University maintain the best possible and most cost-effective coverage for the entire University community, help ensure that emergency resources are available at the travel destinations, and enable the campus Office of Risk Management to be proactive in protecting their health, safety and security.
Travel Alerts
In addition to security extraction and medical evacuation, out-of-state and foreign travelers can receive free real time intelligence and travel alerts through an online service called Worldcue® TRAVELER. Travelers who register their trip online using UC Trips receive direct e-mail notices from Worldcue TRAVELER regarding political unrest, natural disasters, and health warnings affecting their travel destinations.
When you register an out-of-state or international trip using UC Trips, print out the wallet-sized card with the toll-free number to call in case of an emergency. Also, click the link to Travel Intelligence® Trip Brief to create a personal profile for the trip. The traveler will receive a welcome e-mail containing travel information for the country(ies) listed in the personal profile.
If you have already registered with UC Trips but did not sign up for Travel Intelligence Trip Briefs, you can contact Worldcue TRAVELER directly by sending an e-mail to customerservice@ijet.com or calling (443) 716-2419. You will need to provide the traveler's name, UC campus, e-mail address, location, and itinerary.
